Description of Placement Department

The Office of Development is responsible for managing all contributed revenue for the Kennedy Center, National Symphony Orchestra, and Washington National Opera. The Corporate and Foundation Relations team raises approximately $20 million annually from corporations, foundations, and government agencies. We are looking for highly-motivated individuals who are detail-oriented, proactive, and have exceptional interpersonal skills. Learning Objectives:

  1. Donor Cycle Familiarity: Interns will gain an understanding of the fundraising cycle from prospect research, solicitation, and donor stewardship. Interns will observe and contribute to donor communications.
  2. Collaborative Teamwork: Interns will gain significant experience working alongside colleagues on a variety of projects across teams.
  3. Project Management: Interns will learn to manage multiple projects at varying stages from start to completion while developing their organization and time management skills.

Placement Project Descriptions

Project A: Research A core component of Kennedy Center support comes from the Corporate Fund, a group of approximately 100 companies who provide general operating support to the Center. The Corporate Fund intern will contribute to fundraising efforts by researching prospective donors, writing informational briefings, and creating and updating records in constituent databases.

Project B: Solicitations The Corporate Fund intern will help compile Corporate Fund solicitation mailings and assist with follow-up on the hundreds of solicitations sent each year by the Corporate Fund. The intern will also help draft solicitation materials, including cover letters and grant proposals.

Project C: Donor Stewardship The Corporate Fund intern will assist with donor cultivation and stewardship by drafting correspondence, fulfilling ticket and event requests, and maintaining records in constituent database.
