Department description

This placement focuses on assisting with Kennedy Center Dance Education programs, including the year-round career trajectory programs for high school students (Ballet Class Series and Contemporary Dance Series), as well as public master classes, lectures, post and pre-performance discussions, open rehearsals, and more. The intern will learn about the logistics required to implement programs including scheduling, contracting, budgeting, production requirements, selecting lecturers and workshop leaders, and the overall working of Dance Education and the Education Programs and Productions department. The intern will learn the processes required to produce programs within a large institution but will also learn nuances of working in a small team. S/he will learn to evaluate program success and make recommendations based on the evaluations. The intern will also learn how to work with a wide range of people, building interpersonal and customer service skills.  

Project description

The primary focus will be assisting with the planning and execution of Ballet Class Series, Contemporary Dance Series, and dance education events scheduled for fall 2019. These duties may include, but are not limited to, communicating with students, parents, and contractors, serving as an initial point of contact for Dance Education patrons, gathering and organizing participants’ information, event coordination, development of marketing materials, preparing logistical memos, and additional administrative tasks. The intern will also assist with the early planning and audition preparation for the Kennedy Center’s new summer dance program – Kennedy Center Dance Lab. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is important. The intern must be comfortable interacting with large groups of people. Experience working with young people is a plus. A background in dance is helpful but not required. Evening and weekend hours required when events are scheduled.
